A Day With Nextdoorganics Operations Member Aleijuan
Ever wondered what goes on behind the scenes at Nextdoorganics?
The Nextdoorganics team is hard at work to ensure that each package is thoughtfully compiled and delivered smoothly. We’ve spoken with Johanna here, our sourcing expert, who puts thought behind every food item Nextdoorganics delivers to you.
Now, we connected with Aleijuan King, a Brooklyn artist and member of our operations team. He shed more light on the packaging process at our Bed Stuy hub.
How are you involved with Nextdoorganics?
For starters, I help with packing, hosting our open markets [on Sundays], and event planning.
I found out about Nextdoorganics through Steph, the Hub manager. I really appreciate the attitude of a sustainable community that Nextdoorganics inspires.
What does an average day at the Nextdoorganics hub in Bed Stuy look like?
Let’s start with last Monday.
I was in by 9(ish.)
Steph and Lisa work on ordering, and figured out what goes in the fruit packages today. An expected delivery didn’t show with 1/2 lbs lime, 1/2 lbs lemon, 1lbs pears, 1 or 2 cantaloupe.
Our [free-range] eggs then needed to be counted, checked, then divided into full and 1/2 dozen teams.
Josh, our co-founder, gallantly unloaded cantaloupe from an anxiously anticipated delivery.
We deliver a lot of our Nextdoorganics packages on bikes. I took our green bike to SCRATCHbread to pick up our order of bread to distribute. There are so many beautiful people in Brooklyn.
By the time I was back, the produce had arrived and the packing had begun.
I unpacked the bread and jumped into packing.
We finished early.
Made some trail mix.
And learned some more about Farmigo, the dashboard we use to manage our members and orders.
It was a good day.
